The following suggestions will help extend the life of your septic
system:
1. Conserve water, fix leaky toilets and/or
faucets.
2. Do not put fats, oil, grease, pesticides, paint or solvents down
the drain.
3. Do not discard cigarette butts, disposable diapers, sanitary
napkins, cat litter, paper towels, coffee grounds or cloth into
the system.
4. Do not discharge backwash from a water softener into the system.
5. Do not put bleach, ammonia or strong disifectant into the system.
6. Avoid using a garbage disposal.
7. Do not plant trees, put an above-ground pool, shed or pave over
the top of a leach field.
8. If your septic tank has an effluent filter it should be inspected
annnually and cleaned in accordance with manufacturer's directions.
9. Spread out wash loads throughout the week.
10. Check the septic tank annually and have it pumped when there
is more than a foot of solids, or at minimum every three years.
11. Do not use liquid fabric softener, use fabric softener dryer
sheets.
12. Do not let water collect over the leachfield.
13. Keep a copy of your septic system's "as-built" in
a safe location (on the wall where your sewer pipe exits the house).
This gives the location of your septic tank cleanout. |
